CUIN 6397 - Practicum in IT, Summer 2006

During this July 4th holiday break, participants in our course at the Universitry of Houston are at the half-way point in the summer semester. Students and community partners are actively engaged in discussion and modification of the components they are developing for the Third Ward Online Tour. It seems appropriate at this time to try to document some of this process and engage in an online discussion regarding where we are and where we should be going.

So, please add a comment to this post in which you describe any issues that have arisen during your work on this project and ask any questions you have that you would like addressed when we return to class next week.

While the beginning of the course was a little difficult to handle as we tried to understand what the project's goals were, I feel things have improved greatly over the last couple of weeks.

The assignment of groups and projects that each individual can work on was a great step in moving things forward. The digital media group has been working together well and things are on track for our July 11th draft project demonstrations.

The website group hit a snag when we realized that we were on a path toward duplicating the website Project Row Houses has already. We realized that we wanted to design a site which would accentuate the uniqueness and value of PRH. So, we decided to create short digital stories to tell the story of the different programs of PRH. That way, the actual voices of the people who affect and are affected by PRH will be heard.

We will have the preliminary design of the site as well as rough drafts of the stories by the 11th.

I read the resource material provided through links to the Maryland Institute College of Art on "Pattern in Islamic Art" for AH340 and I reviewed the MFAH/UH website on "Viceregal Mexico" and found both interesting and helpful.

I decided to use the photo of Project Row Houses that Ray took during the walking tour as a stand in for the image for my lesson plan. Ray provided us with a good list of photos for the photo bank which will be available Tuesday during class.

The Teacher's Guide team will be creating a Pachyderm page that is linked from the home page on the 3rd Ward. It will include 6 examples of lesson activities on the topic of the 3rd Ward.

Initially I was a little confused about what we were attempting to do and how we were going to accomplish it. Over the last couple of weeks things have gotten a little clearer for me. Bringing in the team developing the map provided me with a visual of the possible layout of the site and how information may be accessed.

Breaking down the assignments within our group provided each of us with a focus. I am in hopes that we will be able to view what each team member has accomplished and give feedback to one another when we meet again. I believe this collaboration will help us improve the products and plans we are creating to be included as a part of the site.

I am not going to be original here, as my feelings are very similar to what Brian and Michelle have said in their postings.
I, too, was confused in the beginning of the course and not sure what we were going to do. Then as what we were going to do became apparent, I was not sure how we were to accomplish it within the time frame.
As the class has become more involved within our assigned groups, now I believe that we can accomplish what has to be done.

As some have already expressed, it was difficult for me to understand where we were going, especially because there were meetings where decisions were made, and somehow it was assumed that the rest of us were aware of them.
However, it has become more clear for me what the goal of the project is, and the presentation of the thrid ward map was crucial for me in putting all the ideas together. After understanding the project,I think that we will succeed in achieving our goals.

Third Ward Online Tour: I was wondering why this class was called “Practicum”, but that’s beside the point. Since we had the walking tour of the Third Ward, it became clear to me what the project was about and where it was headed, however, I am not sure the teamwork idea has worked for me. To add to the development of the team project by working on some of the significant places in the Third Ward, I was surprised at the lack of information about these places and even at Prairie View University library I was unable to find a suitable collection of text on these issues. The Museum of Fine Art has excellent pictures that Ray took but not much text. I think the text exists and I am glad some of it will be online for further reference.
